Badu sang her huge hit "On and On" blending into "Appletree." Peppering her own songs with soul classics like the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" and Roy Ayers's "Searching," she brought the house down with an intense delivery of Chaka Khan's "Stay."Īt the show's end, she improvised a song about a no-good boyfriend who hangs out with his boys smoking and drinking. An extended version of "Sometimes" moved smoothly through several tempo changes. With dreadlocks swathed in a foot-high towering wrap of African fabric, her appearance was a mix of thrift store chic and artsy Afrocentrism. The moment the opening chords to "Rimshot" began, an enthusiastic crowd sang the words well before Badu could enter and sing the song herself. The backup singers and band members arrived onstage first, performing an instrumental interlude of Miles Davis's "So What," to which the singers chimed "Ba-du" in place of the song's title. Before she took the stage, her presence was suggested by an arrangement of colorful cloths, a huge white candle and clusters of incense that stood next to the microphone stand. Erykah Badu had the audience under her spell at Tuesday's sold-out performance at the 9:30 club.
